With “Alice & Bob in Berlin,” Malte Uekermann Kunsthandel presents around 40 works by Martina Ziegler in its PopUp-Gallery at Hufelandhaus on Hegelplatz from May 1 to 30, 2026. The exhibition brings portrait, fragment and abstraction into a visual language shaped by the interplay of analogue painting and digital transformation.
Martina Ziegler has never created likenesses in the classical sense. Her portraits are imaginary image-objects born of a creative, multimedia process. Even where her works appear non-representational, each piece is based on a matrix portrait developed from facial fragments.
In the metamorphosis into abstraction, this image DNA remains intact and becomes the bearer of a broader engagement with perception, media pressure, role models and the complexity of the individual.
In the Berlin context, these works gain additional relevance because they address questions of identity in an idiosyncratic way.
The title “Alice & Bob” stands for the entanglement of analogue and digital painting. Ziegler’s works emerge through a multi-stage process involving painting, scanning, digital editing and renewed return to the image.
At Hufelandhaus on Hegelplatz, a historic building in Berlin-Mitte, the exhibition is presented across nearly 250 square metres. The clear focus is on Martina Ziegler’s works; selected sculptures by Willi Siber, shown in cooperation with Galerie Benden & Ackermann, Düsseldorf, complement the presentation.

Dr. Dorothee Achenbach: Das Universum der Martina Ziegler
When one encounters Martina Ziegler’s works for the first time and allows them to take effect without any explanation, one sees portraits of women whose flawless beauty is blurred, disturbed, injured by interventions. Beauty that dissolves and thus gains in fascination. One also glimpses abstract formations moving across the picture surface in gentle waves like dunes in the desert, or cubic, geometric, and architectural-looking compositions covering the surface. Then there are paintings with swirling gradients of color and looping
bands that move in bright colors exuberantly and intertwined across the picture field. Many things When one encounters Martina Ziegler’s works for the first time and allows them to take effect without any explanation, one sees portraits of women whose flawless beauty is blurred, disturbed, injured by interventions. Beauty that dissolves and thus gains in fascination. One also glimpses abstract formations moving across the picture surface in gentle waves like dunes in the desert, or cubic, geometric, and architectural-looking compositions covering the surface. Then there are paintings with swirling gradients of color and looping
bands, which move in bright colors exuberantly and intertwined across the picture field. Many associations are released in the viewer, each glance at a picture offers new discoveries, evokes new trains of thought. Behind this diversity and heterogeneity lies a strict concept and – this is astonishing – always the same motif: each individual work is based on a portrait, which in turn is composed of several facial fragments, so that the image of a person becomes an unreal likeness.
It is a play with reality and perception, with the individual and the general, the existing and the possibilities. All this makes the complexity of the human being and the multiple demands on the role of the woman resound. Sometimes the basic motif – the „mother matrix“ – can be clearly recognized, sometimes it can be guessed at, sometimes it disappears altogether. And yet a whole new beauty emerges from this superimposition and alienation of the original motif. Martina Ziegler becomes the creator of her own world. This creative act is completed by means of a sophisticated, complex interweaving of technical and painterly means, which is unique in its virtuosity in the artistic landscape. When I look at Martina Ziegler’s mysterious pictorial inventions, the answer to the question of one of my students, who wanted to know what art is actually allowed to do, comes to mind. I said: Art may do anything, but not bore: It may beguile, disturb, provoke, criticize, irritate, delight, instruct. It can do anything – just like in Martina Ziegler’s art universe.
